In this series we explore some of the most commonly used AC terminology and what each means.
Airflow Volume: Refers to the amount of air circulated in a space. Typically measured in cubic feet per minute (cfm)
BTU: Short for “British Thermal Unit”, BTU is a measurement of the heat energy required to reduce or increase the temperature of one pound of water by one-degree Fahrenheit. Higher BTU means more cooling power.
Capacity: Refers to the total output capacity of the AC unit. Typically measured in BTU per hour.
Evaporator Coil: Warm air is drawn over this coil, where humidity is removed, lowering the temperature and creating a cooler air on outflow.
Compressor: A mechanical pump that increases the pressure of the refrigerant gas used to cool air.
Condensate: The water left over as humidity is removed from air passing over the coils and then drained away from the unit.
Damper: Located at the junction points of ductwork, dampers are sheet metal plates that can be closed or opened to control air flow into a zone.
Drain Pan: Sometimes called a condensate pan, is a basin that collects condensate that is then funneled to the drain line.
EER: Energy Efficiency Ratio. A ratio of BTU to energy required to operate.
Energy Star: A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program that aims to help people save money on energy costs while protecting the environment by using more energy-efficient appliances.
