AC Units are known for making a range of noises. While many of these noises are par for the course and a part of normal operation, others are not. Being aware of the difference between normal operating noise, and noises that could indicate an issue, can help you avoid costly repairs or breakdowns.
Below are the top ‘odd’ noises to keep an eye out for with your Florida AC unit.
1. Banging
Could be indicative of loose parts, such as loose fan blades or parts inside of the condenser (such as a connector rod or piston pin).
2. Clanking
Could be a sign of loose parts or unbalanced fan blades.
3. Clicking
May be a sign that there is an electrical issue, such as that with a capacitator or relay switch.
4. Buzzing
Buzzing could be caused by one of several issues including:
5. Squealing
Often a high-pitched squeal is a sign that the compressor needs to be repaired as soon as possible. Squealing could indicate a sign of high internal pressure and/or dangerous operating conditions. In other cases, it could be a sign that the fan motor bearings are dry and/or there is a loose fan belt.
6. Hissing
Hear a hissing coming from your AC? This is commonly due to a refrigerant leak somewhere within the system. From faulty expansion valves, to a broken copper line, pressure in the system can cause a hissing noise as refrigerant escapes.
