A strange-smelling AC could be indicative of several potential problems, ranging from minor to serious health hazards.
First, determine where the smell is coming from. Is it coming from your vents, from the unit outside, or the unit inside your home or business?
Next, Try to Evaluate What Type of Smell It Is.
Gas Smell: If you smell gas or a rotten eggs smell, call an emergency service and immediately evacuate the area and building. Gas leaks are serious and can cause serious injury and/or death. Erring on the side of caution is always advisable.
Moldy or Musty Smell: This could indicate mold or bacterial growth in the vents or ductwork. Sometimes brought on by condensation and excessive moisture, or an old air filter. If changing the air filter doesn’t help, you’ll want to get this checked out by a professional. Burning or Electrical Smell: Never try to troubleshoot electrical issues on your own. Electrical problems can pose a risk of serious injury or fire. If you smell an electrical burn or singing, contact an emergency HVAC service immediately.
