The Best Thermostat Settings for Your Home
Posted on June 10, 2020 by admin

The Best Thermostat Settings for Your Home

One of the most common questions homeowners have about their heating and cooling system, is what is the best thermostat setting for their home. The ideal temperature setting for your home is one that provides a balance between energy costs and comfort. In fact, optimal thermostat settings can save you big. Personal preferences aside, there are some recommended settings that you can start with and adjust from there.

SUMMER

In the hot summer months, the EPA recommends a setting of 78°F when home. If you plan on leaving the home for more than four hours (such as for work), it is suggested that you allow the temperature to rise up to 88°F. According to Energy.gov, every degree in temperature higher than 78°F in summer months could save upwards of 6-8% on your energy costs.

WINTER

The ideal temperature for energy savings is around 68°F. In order to optimize savings further, if you are going to be away from your home for more than a few hours, consider dropping that thermostat temperature by another 10-15 degrees. Doing so can save you up to 5-15% on your energy bills.

Final Thoughts

The perfect thermostat temperature for your home is a personal choice based on needs, comfort and energy use. Smart thermostats can help you optimize temperature at home and when away, further aiding in energy preservation and comfort.
