Why you should replace window AC units

The thought of spending money on central air conditioning can bring a bit of sticker shock at first glance. But there may be some very good reasons why you should replace window AC units.

1. Window AC Units Are Inefficient at Cooling Large Rooms

AC units are designed to handle small enclosed areas, but often perform poorly in large rooms, rooms with high ceilings, or in homes with open floor plans. This means you’ll be running your AC non-stop, pushing it to the brink, and driving up energy costs.

2. Speaking of Energy, Even “Energy Efficient” Window Units Aren’t All that Efficient

Window AC units are constantly fighting an uphill battle. Not only are they trying to cool an area (almost always) larger than the unit was designed to handle, they are placed in a window where drafts of hot air from outside are inevitable. Not only that, radiating heat from outer walls only exacerbates the problem.

3. Keep your Window Unit in All Year? You’re Losing out Even more…

Even the tightest seal around window AC units won’t be enough to effectively eliminate exterior air from getting in. For example, up to 30% of lost energy in a home is due to air leaking around windows and doors.

4. Reduced Air Quality and Indoor Allergens

Unlike HVAC units with professional air filtration systems to cut down on mold, pollen, viruses and other pollutants, AC units merely have a singular screen that is highly ineffective at filtering out anything other than the largest of particulates.
